Well, now that the Rapture has been delayed till October (don’t you hate it when that happens) you might as well consider getting out a bit. After all summer officially starts on June 21.
In NYC summer means street festivals selling the same junk at every “fair” and doing nothing but making it more difficult for your driver to get you to the chopper. Like every city there are good jewels just waiting for you. While there are plenty of jewels at Cartier, there are others just sitting there in the middle of the road. You just need to find them. Two recent fairs I attended include the Hester Street Fair (every Saturday 10AM - 6PM) and the Japan Block Party. For me the best of both revolve around food.
Regardless of how long you are in NYC definitely check out the very local Hester Street Fair. I loved the potpies from The Fat Radish, the empanadas from La Sonrisa Empandas, and the amazing macarons from The Macaron Parlour! But there is more than that. It’s a small fair but I recommend coming early, bringing your hunger along, and plenty of small bills. The small bills are not for cutting lines but for helping out the cashiers, as everyone seems to pay with 20’s.
Last weekend was the Japan Block Party. In classic Japanese style there was flower arranging, okonomiyaki, teriyaki balls, rice balls, and Japanese curry. But this fair had a cultural element that really transported me back to Japan. Young children in yukatas, health issues disguised as toys/candy, and the cleanliness that is Japan thanks to the guy they had going through the crowded street picking up all the trash lest it dirty.
Now what festival will you go to? Why not pick an interesting festival nearby (or far away) to inspire you to visit your dream destination or help you reminisce about that trip you took with the on again off again billionaire. Not those silly festivals where you watch redneck jump in the mud and after the "minor" issue you created at Burning Man you probably wont be allowed back.
Why not go simple and go Greek? This June 3-5 is the Annual Greek Festival By the Bay in Perth Amboy , New Jersey . It’s complete with Greek Dancers and Greek Food and Pastries as well as games and prizes for the children.
Or if you're trying to forget about what happened in Mykonos last year why not head to Gloucester on May 28th and 29th for the Cheese Rolling Festival? www.cheese-rolling.co.uk
But knowing you I’m going to say your palette is more complex than that. Then why not jump in the jet and go to Paris for the Gastronomy Festival? It’s June 6th & 7th. www.gastronomyfestivals.com
Sick of wine? Yeah, me neither but if you are tired of wine festivals switch to something strong the World Barista Championship this June 2-5, 2011 in Bogota naturally. www.worldbaristachampionship.com/
You’ve already missed the World Championships for Rocky Mountain Oysters but there is always next year. www.worldchampionshiprockymountainoysters.com
Or you could give in to the fact that sometimes life is for the dogs and go to Woofstock. www.woofstock.ca
You're not still allergic to dogs are you? If so, then wait for the early Fall when the clothes will fall at the NY Burlesque Festival www.thenewyorkburlesquefestival.com
Regardless, summer is coming so get ready to have some fun.
